A couple was arrested after police found their 13-month-old child trapped inside a bedroom while two dogs engaged in a fatal fight.

Jonathan M. Newton, 26, Angela K. Newton, 28, were charged with endangering a child after police found their uninjured, but blood-stained toddler crying from a vicious fight between an American bulldog and French bull matsiff inside their home in the 400 block of Stoneledge, according to an official Friendswood Police Department statement.

The couple’s other two children said one of the dogs had broken out of its cage and attacked the other dog, according to the statement. The children ran to a neighbor’s house to call 911.

When police arrived, they found blood smeared in the kitchen and hallway and the voice of a child crying inside a locked bedroom, according to the statement. Officers stun one of the dogs with a stun gun and hit the other with bean bags as another officer pulled the baby from the crib.

Medical evaluation revealed the child was not injured during the attack, but the dog fight killed one of the dogs and caused the other to be impounded.

Each of the parents have been jailed on a $10,000. Child Protective Services also was notified and consulted.

The child was released to the custody of a relative.
