Don’t Let the Big Dogs Fool You!

There’s been so much talk in the media about “bad” breeds of dogs. We all know that there really are no bad breeds, just “bad” owners. I grew up being terrified of German Shephards – not because they’re horrible dogs but because everyone around me (I lived in a very secluded rural setting) trained their dogs to be guard dogs and then let them run free on their properties. This made my daily bike ride to town to deliver the morning papers quite an adventure indeed as I tried to pedal faster than the dog could run.

Interestingly enough, the most vicious dog that I’ve ever encountered in my life was a very small, adorable Lhasa Apso named Tuffy (a very good name). Tuffy was my childhood dog. I can assure you that he was showered with love and attention. These funny looking little dogs were bred to protect the Tibetan monks and they tend to bond with one person.

That person for Tuffy was my father. When my father arrived home from work Tuffy would run through the living room and family room bouncing off of all the sofas. He’d make this circuit three or four times and then throw himself at my dad. He had some other strange proclivities though – he loved women’s underwear. In the morning my mom and I would find our “unmentionables” strewn through the hallway (slightly damp). I can’t begin to tell you how distressing this was to a 10 year old!

Tuffy had no concept of his size and limitations. He actually ate 9 of our chickens (including our prized Rooster) and he tried to attack a horse. You should have seen the look of shock on my friend’s face (pretty neat to have a friend just drop by on horseback – admittedly she only did it once). We had another dog as well. He was the most beautiful, docile Collie named Prince. Prince had broken his leg as a puppy and Tuffy would nip at the sore spot and start fights with the Collie. We, as a family, were terrified of the Collie becoming an aggressive dog and made the heart-wrenching decision to find new homes for the dogs.

That’s what parents always tell kids, isn’t it? They’ve gone to a nice farm in the country. God, I hope they didn’t pull that trick on me. I can’t see it happening. My dad was so soft hearted. We briefly raised chickens (which he called his “girls” – we even named our rooster Buddy). My dad decided that if he was going to make a go of it he was going to have to slaughter a few and put them in the freezer for the winter. As he plucked the feathers from his “girls” he cried like a baby, gathered up all the carcasses and feathers and drove them to the dump and we never spoke of it again.

Home Made Dog Toys

Ideas For Homemade Dog Toys

by Clare Bristow

puppy-chewingHere are few ideas for homemade dog toys that I’ve gathered from the web and comments that you’ve posted on this site.

<I hope they provide you with some inspiration for making your own dog toys – please add to the list with any other suggestions you have.

Plastic Bottle Toys

The plastic bottle is a much under rated toy in my opinion, Zoe has had hours of fun chasing plastic milk bottles around the deck.

Don’t let your dog play unsupervised with the bottles, they can easily crack and you don’t want your dog swallowing the plastic. Ideally, just use the bottle once and then dispose of it.
Here are some ideas:
The Plain Plastic Bottle – it doesn’t get any easier than this; just remove the cap and labels, squeeze the bottle so it makes a great crackly sound to get your dog’s attention, throw it up in the air and off you go, an instant toy for your dog to chase and fetch.

Stanley Coren shows you how it’s done (including the crackly bit) in the following video clip (originally posted in Lead in Dog Toys – DIY test kits unreliable), and he reminds you that you can always take the bottle back for your deposit once your dog has finished playing with it.

The Plastic Bottle with Beans – to make the bottle more interesting you can put dried beans into the bottle before screwing the cap on tightly. Here’s a dog showing you how much fun this can be:

A variation is the sock bottle dog toy – put a sock over the bottle and tie a knot in the top of the sock; this will make the bottle more chewable for your dog.The Plastic Bottle with Treats – put treats in the bottle instead of dried beans and cut a small hole in the side of the bottle. The treats come out as your dog is playing with the bottle.

Rope Toys

You can use an existing length of rope that you already have and tie a few knots in it for an excellent chew toy.

Bear in mind that rope can fray so trim the ends of the rope frequently so your dog doesn’t swallow the rope strands. Avoid nylon rope as your dog can easily shred this, and if swallowed can cause intestinal blockage.

An alternative is to make your own rope toys from fleece or tea towels.

Here’s a step by step guide to making a fleece rope, and many thanks to Paula raised the point that you should avoid fleece material that has been treated with a flame retardant.

Whatever type of rope you use it can be made more exciting by soaking it in broth before giving it to your dog.

Yesterday I mentioned that Denise had found that Penn tennis balls are made in the US, and so may be safer for your dog to play with.

Ball on a Rope – drill two holes in the ball and thread a piece of rope or cord through the holes and tie the rope tightly just above the ball.

Here’s Stanley Coren again to show you how to do it:

Treat Ball – make your own treat ball by slicing through the tennis ball and stuffing it with treats; your dog will be kept busy trying to prize the ball apart to get to the treats.Balls in the Tubing Toy – I found this idea on My Dog Parlance.

Attach a few pieces of water-pipe together (preferably corners), pop a ball in one end and then let your dog get the ball out again.

In yesterday’s article Dog Toys from China – the Alternatives I mentioned that PVC can be a hazard, so either use non PVC piping or just supervise your dog and don’t let him start chewing the plastic.

Socks and Trousers

Barbara said that she cut the legs off old jeans and tied knots in them, thereby making an excellent chew toy for her Rottie, Tank – thanks for that suggestion Barbara.

Old socks can also be made into great toys – this article shows you how to make a sock ball and a sock swing ball.

A caution about using socks, or any item of clothing or footwear as a toy is that dogs don’t know the difference between an ‘old’ shoe and a ‘new’ shoe – if you give them an old shoe to chew on then every shoe is likely to be treated in the same way.

Cardboard Boxes

Another Zoe favorite is the cardboard box – when she was a puppy I used to put a few treats inside the box and tape the lid on. She’d spend quite some time attacking the cardboard box and pushing it around the floor until she could get to the treats.

Quite quickly she realized that if she pushed the box up against a wall it crushed and this was the easiest way to get the treat out.

Any size box will provide entertainment, as Toby shows us below:

I hope this has given you a few ideas – have fun!

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of companies are on the ‘Don’t Test’ list?

The list includes cosmetics, personal care, and household cleaning product companies only. PETA’s Caring Consumer Project was founded upon the fact that no law requires animal testing of these types of products, so manufacturers of these products have no excuse for animal testing and should be boycotted until they change to a non-animal-testing policy.

The list does not include companies that manufacture only products that are required by law to be tested on animals (e.g., pharmaceuticals, automotive and garden chemicals, food additives, etc.). While PETA is opposed to all animal testing, our quarrel in those instances is less with the individual companies and more with the regulatory agencies that require animal testing. Nonetheless, it is important to let companies know that it is their responsibility to convince the regulatory agencies that there is a better way to determine product safety.

The “Don’t Test” list may include companies that manufacture both products that are and products that are not required to be tested on animals, but in order to be listed, each company has stated that it does not conduct any animal tests that are not required by law.

How does a company get on the list?

Companies listed either have signed PETA’s statement of assurance or provided a statement verifying that they do not conduct or commission any nonrequired animal tests on ingredients, formulations, or finished products and that they pledge not to do so in the future.

How do I know that these companies really don’t test on animals?

To a degree, the statement of assurance is a matter of trust. However, companies are putting their integrity on the line when they respond to consumers. A company that has publicly announced an end to its animal tests and states in writing that it doesn’t test on animals would face a public relations disaster (and potential lawsuits) if it were caught testing on animals. Companies are well aware that consumers are serious about the issue of animal testing, and they know that it would ruin the public’s confidence in their products if it were discovered that they were being dishonest about their animal-testing policies.

What about a product whose label says, ‘No Animal Testing,’ but whose manufacturing company is not on PETA‘s ‘Don’t Test’ list?

Labels can be deceiving, so be careful. No specific laws exist regarding cruelty-free labeling of products, so companies can take liberties. While it is unlikely that a company would put blatantly false information regarding its animal-testing practices on its products, the statements it does make may not be fully informative and may indeed mislead consumers. For example, the label on Clairol’s Herbal Essence shampoo states that it is not tested on animals; Clairol, however, does test other products on animals. Many animal-testing companies have some cruelty-free products, but we must boycott all the companies’ products in order to pressure them into stopping all animal tests. If the label on a company’s product says that it is not tested on animals and the company isn’t on either of PETA’s lists, please share the company’s contact information with PETA so that we can formally inquire about the company’s animal-testing policy. Likewise, if you communicate with a company that claims to be cruelty-free but is not on our list, please ask for a statement in writing and copy the statement to PETA. We will communicate with the company to see if it meets all our cruelty-free criteria. Meanwhile, PETA recommends purchasing products made only by companies on our “Don’t Test” list.

Why do some companies’ product labels say, ‘No Animal Ingredients,’ when, in fact, they contain beeswax, lanolin, whey, etc.?

Some companies are not educated about or sensitive to the suffering of animals in the production of certain products that do not involve the actual slaughter of the animal. PETA attempts to educate these companies, but some have persisted in inaccurately labeling their products as free of animal ingredients even though it is a fact that honey, lanolin, etc., are animal products. Our advice is always to read the entire label before believing such a statement, and we encourage you to voice your complaints to these companies as well. For our list of “Animal Ingredients and Their Alternatives,” please visit

How often are PETA’s product lists updated?

PETA’s “Do Test” and “Don’t Test” factsheets are updated approximately every two to four months to reflect additions (e.g., if we are informed of a new company’s non-animal-testing policy), deletions (e.g., if a non-animal-testing company is purchased by an animal-testing company or if a company goes out of business), changes in contact information, etc. These factsheets are based on the most current information available at the time of printing. Companies may have changed their animal-testing policies after this edition was printed.

PETA reserves the right to choose which companies will be included, based on company policy. Inclusion on any list is not an endorsement of a company or any of its products by PETA. Please contact PETA if you have any questions about the status of listed companies or if you know the address of a company that is not listed.

The following companies manufacture products that ARE NOT tested on animals. Those marked with an asterisk (*) manufacture strictly vegan products-made without animal ingredients, such as milk and egg byproducts, slaughterhouse byproducts, lanolin from sheep, honey, or beeswax (for a list of animal ingredients and their alternatives, please contact PETA or visit Companies without an asterisk may offer some vegan products. Some of the company names are followed by the name of their parent or subsidiary company or by examples of products manufactured by that company.

Companion-Animal Food Manufacturers

What’s wrong with pet food?

Most caring consumers would never guess that lonely dogs and cats are confined to tiny, barren laboratory cages for years on end and subjected to horrible experiments in order to test dog and cat food.

To expose this tragedy, PETA conducted a nine-month undercover investigation of a laboratory that performed cruel animal tests for Iams and other major companion-animal food companies. What our investigator uncovered would outrage anyone with a heart:

  • Lonely dogs driven mad from confinement to barren steel and cement cells
  • Dogs dumped on cold concrete flooring after having chunks of muscle cut out of their thighs
  • Experimenters who severed dogs’ vocal cords in order to keep them quiet
  • Sick dogs who were languishing in their cages without veterinary care

These animals suffered so that Iams and other companion-animal food companies could slap “new and improved” labels on their products. The following companies make top-quality food for dogs and cats-without harming animals in laboratories. Please help us drive animal abusers out of business by buying only from these companies. Companies not on this list either responded that they do conduct laboratory experiments on animals or they failed to respond to our numerous inquiries and are assumed to conduct laboratory experiments on animals.

For more information about how dog and cat food is contaminated with cruelty and to find the most up-to-date list of companies that don’t test on animals, check out

Short Bio info

I or my family have always had dogs for as long as I can remember. I was raised with a variety of mutts and purebreds (including a Doberman who loved me and a Rottweiler who thought I was a littermate). I guess you could say my love for animals, and dogs in particular, is just in my blood!

I’ve been “in dogs” with Shelties, my breed of choice, since 1994. I also have a Rocky Mountain horse who is in training for the show ring. Horses are my first love, and now that I have both, I have to work to make time for all of them! 🙂

I’ve always shown my own dogs, at least to get them started. I’ve bred and/or owned AKC obedience Champions, UKC conformation Champions, and AKC/CKC (Canadian Kennel Club) conformation winners. I’m still searching for that elusive AKC/CKC Champion.

I’m considered a reputable breeder and responsible owner by my peers and encourage the search for knowledge. I believe that a knowledgeable dog owner is a responsible dog owner. You can see the subjects of my breeding program at

Peer Pressure!!!!!!

Okay, so what could make an otherwise sensible dog sport such a get-up?  The answer is clear – PEER PRESSURE!!!!!!  The same kind of peer pressure that caused me to start creating a new banner for Michele’s blog at 1:00am today!  I’m either a really good friend, or easily swayed by her charms (and her whining).

Michele’s computer had a little “illness” last night so it is up to me intrepid reader to try to keep her blog going for a few days.  I can totally relate to the computer crisis.  I taught an intensive 10-day university course at the beginning of July (an additional qualification course for teachers) and I spent hours and hours and hours (you get the picture) preparing handouts and beautiful powerpoint presentations.  At midnight (you’ll probably guess by now that I’m a total night owl) I got a quick flash of the dreaded blue screen and then everything was gone.  Try as I might, nothing would revive the beast and I am now typing on a snazzy new laptop.

Thankfully I had the photos of all my artwork (yes that’s my painting you find smattered around Fido’s Place) on a CD!!!!!!  All of my stuff that was job-related was lost into the ether.  Since I’m on summer vacation at the moment I really don’t care that much – perhaps I’ll get a hard dose of reality in September when I have to reinvent the wheel!!!!!

Well, I know I haven’t really talked too much about dogs, but I did provide you with an amusing picture to look at.  If you have the time, why don’t you drop by my blog and take a look.

Rachel Ray Launches New Pet Food

Yesterday, Monday July 28th 2008 Rachel Ray ‘Celebrity Chef’ launches her own line of pet food. –

I have to say I am ‘dubious’, as everyone knows I am not by any means a ‘commercial’ pet food fan.

However in the spirit of ‘fair play’, and because of Ms.Ray’s well known reputation as an animal advocate. (plus… the fact she owns a pit bull ‘does’ prejudices me a ‘little’ in her favor 🙂 ) I am going to post the following information on the launching of her new products.

Speaking of ‘fair play’, I will also be conducting research into her ingredients. There will be no special treatment given because of her celebrity status. (but I am hoping for best I will admit) So state tuned….

Rachael Ray Launches Line of Super Premium Dog Food & Treats
Rachael Ray(TM) Nutrish – How Cool Is That?

Last update: 9:09 a.m. EDT July 28, 2008
NEW YORK, July 28, 2008 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ — Daytime host, best selling author and pet lover Rachael Ray launches a new line of super premium dog food and treats called Rachael Ray(TM) Nutrish. Ray’s proceeds from each sale will be donated to support Rachael’s Rescue ( ), which is dedicated to helping at-risk animals through adoption, medical care and educational programs, along with training and outreach initiatives.
Rachael Ray Nutrish includes two varieties of all natural dog food featuring real meat as the first ingredient — Real Chicken and Veggies and Real Beef and Brown Rice. There are no by-products, fillers, artificial flavors or preservatives; and each recipe contains:

— Antioxidant nutrients like vitamin E and selenium to support a healthy
immune system
— A healthy fiber blend including oatmeal for easy digestion
— Omega Fatty Acids, with a dash of EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) to
support healthy skin and a shiny coat
— High quality proteins to support healthy organs and lean muscle mass
— Calcium for strong bones and healthy teeth

The launch also includes both crunchy and chewy treats named after Rachael’s best friend, her dog Isaboo. Isaboo Booscotti crunchy treats come in two flavors — bacon and peanut butter; and Isaboo Grill Bites chewy treats come in beefy burger and bacony burger flavors.
“I love my dog Isaboo and as a member of my family I need to make sure that she eats as well as the rest of us,” says Ray. “With the launch of Nutrish, I now have the opportunity to share with other pet lovers some of her favorite meals, flavors and special treats.”
“We worked closely with Rachael on the recipes to ensure that the formulations included natural, high-quality ingredients,” explains Doug Lang, EVP, sales and marketing, Ainsworth Pet Nutrition — manufacturer of Rachael Ray Nutrish. “Pet parents will receive the best of both worlds — a delicious recipe and a highly nutritious formula with meat as its first ingredient and no by-products.”
Rachael Ray Nutrish is available almost everywhere you shop for pet food. The Nutrish dog food line retails anywhere from $8.99 – $16.99, depending on the package size. Isaboo dog treats retail for $3.99.

What You Can Do If You Are Having Trouble Affording Veterinary Care

Help for Vet Health Care Costs

Many pet owners, at one point or another, are faced with unexpected veterinary bills.

Veterinary medicine has advanced to such a degree that caregivers have new, and often expensive, options for the care of their ailing pets. Although the cost of veterinary care is actually very reasonable in comparison with the much higher cost of human health care, an unexpected medical emergency can present a major financial dilemma for an unprepared pet owner.

The Humane Society of the United States recommends that, in addition to preparing for routine pet-care costs, you regularly set aside money to cover for unexpected veterinary bills or consider pet health insurance. For example, create a special “pet savings account” and contribute money to it on a regular basis.

Another great option is to purchase a pet health insurance policy. The HSUS has partnered with Petplan USA, to offer great saving to our members. Petplan USA is affiliated with Petplan UK—the world’s largest and most trusted pet insurance company and recommended by more pet owners and veterinarians than any other. Use whichever option works best for you. The important thing is to have a plan and stick to it.

If, despite your planning, your pet incurs major veterinary expenses that you have trouble affording, consider these suggestions:

• Ask your veterinarian if he or she will let you work out a payment plan. Many veterinarians are willing to work out a weekly or monthly payment plan so that you do not have to pay the entire cost of veterinary care up front.

• Contact your local shelter. Some shelters operate or know of local subsidized veterinary clinics or veterinary assistance programs. You can find the name and number of your local shelter in the Yellow Pages of your phone book under “animal shelter,” “animal control” or “humane society,” or by calling Information. You can also go to and enter your zip code to find a list of animal shelters, animal control agencies, and other animal care organizations in your community.

• If you have a specific breed of dog, contact the National Club for that breed. (The American Kennel Club,, has a list of the national dog clubs.) In some cases, these clubs offer a veterinary financial assistance fund. Additionally, The HSUS has a list of breed-specific assistance groups.

• There are some organizations that offer assistance locally (by state or community). See our state-by-state (including Canada) listing.

• The HSUS also has a list of organizations that provide assistance to senior, disabled or ill pet owners.

• Ask your veterinarian to submit an assistance request to the American Animal Hospital Association’s (AAHA) “Helping Pets Fund.” In order to qualify, your animal hospital must be AAHA accredited. To learn more about the program visit the AAHA web site. To find an AAHA accredited hospital in your area, search online at

• If you purchased your dog from a reputable breeder, check your contract to see if there is a health guarantee that covers your pet’s ailment.

• Check with veterinary schools in your state to see if they offer discount services to the public. You can find a list of veterinary schools in the Education section of the American Veterinary Medical Association’s (AVMA) website,

• Use your credit card. Ask for a higher credit limit or a cash advance.

• Call your bank. Ask about loan programs or other options they can suggest that might be helpful in your situation.

• Ask your employer for a salary advance.

• Alert family and friends and ask them each for a $25 loan.

• Consider taking on a part-time job or temping.

• Contact Care Credit at

The following is a list of organizations that provide financial assistance to pet owners in need. Please keep in mind that each organization is independent and has their own set of rules and guidelines. Therefore you will have to investigate each one separately to determine if you qualify for assistance:

* IMOM Inc.,
* Help-A-Pet,
* The Pet Fund,
* Good Sam Fund,
* United Animal Nations LifeLine Fund
* Angels for Animals,
* Brown Dog Foundation,
* Feline Veterinary Emergency Assistance Program,
* Feline Outreach,
* Cats In Crisis
* The Perseus Foundation (Cancer specific),
* Orthodogs’ Silver Lining Foundation (Orthopedic Cases and Service Dogs),
* Canine Cancer Awareness,
* Cody’s Club (Radiation treatments)
* Diabetic Pets Fund
* The Mosby Foundation,

Please remember that, depending on the severity of your pet’s illness or injury, you may still lose your pet even after great expense. Discuss the prognosis and treatment options thoroughly with your veterinarian, including whether surgery or treatment would just cause your animal discomfort without preserving a life of good quality.

Also remember that a little preventive care can go a long way. Having your pet spayed or neutered, keeping her shots up to date, and keeping your pet safely confined can prevent serious and costly health problems. If you have trouble affording the cost to spay or neuter your pet, contact your local animal shelter. They may operate a clinic or know of a local clinic that offers subsidized services.

Unfortunately, due to our limited resources as a non-profit animal protection organization, The HSUS does not provide direct financial assistance to pet owners for veterinary or other expenses. If you know of any veterinary assistance programs or services that we have not included here, please let us know by calling 202-452-1100.

“Mission Statement:

“Helping people help pets. To better the lives of sick, injured and

United Animal Nations

“The mission of LifeLine is to help homeless or recently rescued animals
suffering from life-threatening conditions that require specific and
immediate emergency veterinary care.

“We strive to serve Good Samaritans and rescue groups who take in sick
or injured

low-income families pay for immediate emergency veterinary care.”

UK Assistance with Veterinary Bills;

“Most of us can cope with the financial commitment involved in the day
to day care of our pets. However, how many of us come out in a cold
sweat when our pet is ill or injured and we know we have to take it to
the vet?

“Most of us are fortunate enough to be able to afford it but, some of us
who love our animals dearly cannot.

“Unfortunately we do not have a PDSA or a RSPCA Centre within our area,
but there are a few charities who may be able to help.”
